Your Feelings Aren’t Always a Call to Action

We talk about being authentic. We talk about being honest about what we think, what we feel, what we want.

But does being authentic mean acting on every thought or emotion we have?

I don’t think so.

What about consistency?

What about keeping your word?

What about the character you are building through the choices you are making regardless of how you feel in the moment?

What about feeling angry without choosing to speak from anger?

What about wanting to walk away without walking away?

What about feeling uncertain but still following through?

Authenticity isn't about giving every feeling permission to lead.

If it were, we'd all gravitate toward what feels easiest and most comfortable, even if it isn't what is best for us.

It's about being honest enough to recognize what you're feeling, aware enough to understand it and grounded enough to allow space to decide how you want to respond.

Your feelings are part of who you are, but they don't define your character. Your choices do.

Perhaps a deeper question isn't, “Am I being true to how I feel?”

It's, “Am I being true to the person I want to be?”

Reflection

Where are you letting your feelings define what feels authentic, even when it doesn't serve you?

This is central to my Integrated SELF approach. Integration is learning to notice what you honestly think and feel without allowing every thought or emotion to dictate how you act. It’s about creating enough awareness and space to choose responses that align with your highest desires, values, and commitments.
